Has VRBO finally outlived its usefulness?

VRBO was the grandaddy of the "Vacation Rental by-Owner" scene. Started by a couple to promote their own condo, it has grown into a behemoth with tens of thousands of listings around the world.

Five short years ago, a listing on VRBO was a great value at $149. They had great traffic, there wasn't much competition in individual locations, and there really weren't any sites doing it much better.

Today, that same ad will cost you around $650, and you may be relegated to page two or three for your destination, since properties on VRBO are ranked by two criteria- seniority, and the number of pictures you pay to display, and many of those Owners at the top of each location have been on VRBO for years.
